TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK

Happy New Year!   We are looking forward to what God has in store in 2013 for His ministry at Forest Park Ministry Center.  This past year has been full, and for me personally, a great challenge due to added responsibilities regarding graduate school and internship.  With these completed, however, I am excited to report to you that the outreach opportunities into the community have the potential to expand in the coming year through Forest Park Ministry Center.
First, I want to share some 2012 statistics with you.  1,760 guests visited the center for assistance, representing 4,277 family members who were assisted with food and / or clothing.  That translates to 46, 736 pounds of food given to families in need during the year 2012.  62 of those families received financial assistance for utilities, at least 90 of those families received baby items.  There were 15 newborn babies that we had the privilege to visit in the home, pray and talk with the mom, and present them with a layette of beautiful new necessities for the baby made possible by the groups who have so graciously supplied the layette ministry throughout the year.
All of these statistics are “small potatoes”, though, compared to the lives that have been won for God’s Kingdom.  During 2012, 14 people prayed during their visit to receive Christ as their personal savior.  All of the statistics above pale in comparison to the fact that these souls that were lost and hopeless now know the joy and hope of faith in Christ.
A stressful year has ended with bountiful joy as we have seen God answer prayer in several ways.  A dear friend wrote on her Facebook page about the reminder that God grows us in our trials. This is so true – and those challenges are the very venues in which His glory shines!  Friends and colleagues have had trials followed by God’s grace and blessings, and my own family has been through illness and healing as well.  And here at the center, God has raised some men who are seizing the opportunity to mentor men in the neighborhood.  Please pray for these efforts, bathed in prayer, to be rewarded with fruit for the Kingdom!
We are so thankful for your prayerful support.  We are all a team, including each of you, carrying out the Great Commission in our community.  May each of you have a blessed 2013.
Joyfully serving,
Donna McCullough, Director
Forest Park Ministry Center

Tis the Season!

Giving.  Thinking about the season upon us.  And gratitude beyond measure for all who have given time, talents, words of encouragement, gifts, and prayer as we held the 4th annual Christmas Toy Sale for Families in Need.  It was a powerful blessing; even as the stress of logistical details loomed, there was always the reminder that something much bigger than petty details was happening.  Grace.  Joy.  Sharing Christ's love.  Lisa shared on her blog the moving story about one family.  Shirley, one of the cafe volunteers, shared the experience of visiting with a grandmother who, through tears, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to select and give gifts for her grandchildren in her custody.  140 volunteers gave to others last Saturday at the toy sale, and countless others gave toys, supplies, and baked goodies needed to make it happen.
Every week, volunteers assist us at the center to reach others in every day ways - providing food, clothing, vouchers to shop for clothing, a listening ear, a word of encouragement, and most importantly, prayer and hope through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His Good News.  I am so humbled to work alongside so many precious servants who desire to be the hands and feet of Christ.  I am posting a current list of the permanent volunteers, those who work voluntarily day in and day out to live out the Great Commission in our "Judea".  If you know one of these, take a moment to say thanks and ask them about their experiences.  You may be inspired and led to do the same.
As for me, words cannot adequately express my thanks to these friends for their encouragement, for their help, and for blessing me with the example of their service.  God is good.
Blessings this Christmas season,
Donna

Giving Thanks

It's a most wonderful time of the year.  I have just heard that song on the radio, and it reminds me that even when chaos reigns all around me, Christ's intent is for us to experience His peace in our souls.  It's a daily choice, to allow culture's disorderly array to manage our well-being and our faith life, or to allow Christ to do it.  Paul wrote to the Romans about that very thing:  "Do not change yourselves to be like people of this world, but be changed within by a new way of thinking.  Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to Him" (Romans 12:2).  That sums up the purpose of reaching out to others with life-changing answers, not just emergency needs.  That is why, in addition to the food and clothing assistance (on Wednesday alone, we saw representatives from 65 families, each of whom received both food assistance and special provisions for Thanksgiving dinner), Forest Park Ministry Center is also offering mentoring through the Layette Ministry (in-home visits with moms and newborns), an accompanying booklet to assist them as they provide a spiritually and physically healthy environment for their children, and M&M's Bible Cafe, a weekly Bible study for moms and their mentors that meets at the ministry center.  In addition, those guests who express need for individual counseling are given the care needed to allow them to grow through distressing life situations.
An answer to a long time prayer need is being fulfilled now - and we are praising God!  For many months, we have prayed for the opportunity to provide a venue for the young men in the neighborhood to meet and learn how to become the men and fathers that God desires and their children need.  Recently, a retired police officer visited the center and asked specifically about how he could invest himself in the ministry.  When he heard this dream, he felt led to follow through, and with the help of others that he is recruiting, will begin "Honor Begins At Home" in January, meeting each week at the center.  In addition, we are in the planning stages of another group of women with specific needs.
God is teaching me so much about patience and waiting on Him.  As needs are becoming evident to me, I want to jump in and rescue.  But I am being taught to allow Him to bring those alongside who have passion for Him and reaching people in need.  Even in the food pantry - after such a whirlwind day on Wednesday, the pantry was BARE!  On Thursday, helpers brought food from a local school (see photos below) and on Saturday, teens came and stocked. Then on Monday, another church brought food - and none of those deliveries had been on the regular schedule!  Obviously, it was on God's, though!
As I reflect on these and many other blessings, I also pray that each of you has a blessed Thanksgiving.  Remembering that Christ has given us the ultimate gift, let's all focus our eyes on His goodness, mercy, and grace.  I pray that we all experience this as we give thanks, and as we usher in the season to celebrate His birth.
Joyfully serving,
Donna

Eyes and Hearts Open to Those God Moments

Callie came to the ministry center for food, but her eyes and her mannerisms spoke so much more. As she interviewed her during intake, Ena began sharing with her God's plan of salvation and His promises.  Callie said that she wanted to know, wanted to be saved, and was ready to take that step, but wanted to do it alone.  Ena respectfully allowed Callie a time of silence and meditation, then prayed with her.  Ena feels that Callie accepted Christ in her heart and will be able to follow up with her at her next visit.
Christina hobbled into the center, also looking for food assistance.  But Christina was also looking for hope and healing.  When Fred introduced her to me, I noticed her disability and asked her to tell me about it.  One month ago, Christina was shot in both legs, the victim of random shooting going on nearby her walk home one evening.  She related to me the fear that she felt when she was shot; she thought that she was going to die.
I told Christina that I could understand such a fear; it must have been terrifying.  Then I asked an important question:  "If that had been the case, where would you be today?"  She shook her head.  "I don't know.  I have wanted to be saved, but I just have never found a church that I liked to do it in."
Friends, I have heard many reasons, many responses, but never this.  I told Christina that I did not recall anywhere in the Bible where it stated that a person had to find the right "church fit" in order to receive Christ's salvation.  Together, we turned to the book of Romans, chapter 3, and we read the words telling us that we are all sinners, we have all fallen short of God's glory.  We also read that we sinners, by professing faith in Jesus Christ, are justified before God because Jesus paid the price for our sins.  Christina asked to receive Christ that very day, and prayed a beautiful prayer asking for forgiveness and salvation.  Now, she is seeking with the Holy Spirit's help, a church that will nurture and disciple her.
This month, our last Conversational English student "graduated" to the Conversational English School at First Baptist Church.  She is learning alongside over 167 other students of many nationalities, and her sweet daughter is enjoying the socialization with other children her age.  What a joy to see her take this bold new step!
And let's not forget the miracle of the bread truck.  Over 300 loaves of delicious wheat berry bread were donated to give to families in need.  What a treat for them!  It seems that the truck had an accident, and the bakery instructed the company to distribute the bread to ministries who helped feed the hungry.  What a blessing - and not one case of bread had been damaged in the accident!
Food distribution, clothing gift certificates, home visits with layettes for new moms, Bible studies, and even one - on - one counseling -- all of these "routine" activities are opportunities for the most important - to leave an indelible mark on each recipient so that he or she knows beyond the shadow of doubt that there is a God who loves and cares for them, and that He has a plan for each life that He has created.  There can be no other more important truth to convey to people in poverty - whether it is material poverty or poverty of spirit.
This month, over 3.000 pounds of food were distributed for 286 family members of the guests who visited, and nearly 20% of those who visited were new guests.  As we minister to our guests, we ask that you join us in prayer, as we pray each morning before opening the doors, that "God's grace abound throughout the day", allowing us to see each guest through His eyes, and that He will use us as His vessels to give them hope and a smile.
On October 14, you have the opportunity to visit Forest Park Ministry Center's Open House.  As we celebrate the ministry center's 15th birthday, we also invite you to see the refurbished facilities, to hear from those who invest time and energy into the ministry, and to learn how you might plug into what God is doing.  Come join us!

Joyfully serving,
Donna

Community Missions Goes Global

Community Missions to Global Missions – Not Just a Theory Anymore!
By Sherry White and Donna McCullough

I have heard repeatedly from the pulpit, from missionaries at home and abroad, that missions do not have to happen far away, nor do they happen exclusively at home.  I have even been told – and have witnessed first-hand, that the world is coming to our back yard.  That seemed for so long to be the experiences of others – friends in community ministries in melting pot cities like New York City or even Atlanta.  But through ministry to the neighborhood at Forest Park Ministry Center, this reality has been borne out in the flesh – and has become a global mission – literally!
Over three years ago, my friend and colleague, Lou Ann, introduced me to a new family in the Forest Park neighborhood.  These were people who appeared Hispanic but spoke a very different language that we could not understand – even those of us with a little knowledge of Spanish.  This opened the door to realize that there are large pockets of families living in the Montgomery area who are Mixtec, an indigenous Indian race of people from the mountainous regions of Southern Mexico and Guatemala.  Lou Ann had learned that the children in these families were having difficulty in school; their parents had no way of reading the papers sent home for them, and even if a Spanish interpretation was provided, it did no good for them.  She had begun tutoring these children, assisting them with explaining the instructions and even filling out various forms and papers necessary for school.
Convicted about the need for Mixtec parents to learn English, we prayed for the way that God would have us to do it.  The Conversational English school at First Baptist was our first choice, but the cultural barriers that had kept these families sequestered into their own subcommunities had fostered some misunderstanding, maybe even a lack of trust coupled with fear of authority because of immigration issues, and the socioeconomic differences between these families and the internationals in our community associated with the military and with industries were tremendous.
So we embarked upon an effort to teach Conversational English to a small group of Mixtec women, some of whom were illiterate even in their own language – they had oral language skills only!  Participation of many of the women was sporadic, as their duties at home took precedence over any outside activities.  But one young mother, “Joselina”, became extremely consistent – and she brought with her three preschool and toddler children who needed help, too.  Their two older siblings were learning English in school, but these children, especially five-year-old “Omar” knew only the Mixtec heard at home and were ill prepared for the kindergarten class which he would enter the following school year.
Enter Sherry.  She had been on numerous medical missions trips to Mexico, and had developed a love for the people of the mountainous regions of that country.  When Donna and Carol, who had been teaching English to Joselina, introduced Sherry to these children, she had the same heartstring pull toward this family – and poured herself into tutoring the young ones, especially concentrating on prepping Omar for kindergarten.  He went from knowing NOTHING ENGLISH to learning ABCs, and even reading – and when school started, he fit it beautifully, earning excellent marks even the first reporting term!
Others reached out to this family.  Greg and his family visited their home numerous times to assist the older children with homework and other needs.  Those of us at the ministry center visited, assisted, provided rides to doctor and WIC appointments.  And as Christmas approached, Raoul, Joselina’s husband, was so thrilled to be able to purchase his children’s gifts from the Ministry Center Toy Sale,
Then tragedy struck.  Raoul, an otherwise loving family man, had an affinity for drinking with the guys.  One night in February, Raoul was arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct.  While most who are arrested for such are fined, perhaps allowed to sleep it off or maybe serve a small amount of time, Raoul was the exception.  He had in his possession a gun, which we believe had been purchased only for his and his family’s protection.  But the right to bear arms is only a right if you are an American citizen.  Otherwise, it is a felony.  So Raoul, after several months in detention, was deported back to Mexico.
Joselina was heart broken, but she knew that she had to care for her children.  With her limited knowledge of the English language (we had begun with learning fast foods from flash cards), Joselina found a job frying potatoes at a fast food restaurant!  And we taught her how to navigate the MATS bus route to work each day.  The children were doing great in school, Joselina was earning money for rent and food, but they missed Raoul terribly, and he missed them.  Joselina had learned, about the time that Raoul was arrested, that she was expecting another child, and Raoul wanted to see his new daughter, too.  So with heavy hearts, and fearing for their safety on the journey, we said goodbye to this brave young woman and her beautiful children, and they returned to Mexico.  Sherry vowed that on her next mission trip, she would try to locate this family.
Anna, Joselina’s cousin, remained in Montgomery.  Anna continues to learn English, does know Spanish, and continues to be a great help in interpreting Mixtec to Spanish and even to English.  When Sherry’s mission trip agenda had been set, she asked Anna for the location and phone information for Joselina and her family.  Oscar, our missionary friend who now lives in Puebla, was able to phone Joselina and learned that they are living in poor conditions, there are no job opportunities for Rauol, the children had been ill, and there was no money for them to travel to Puebla for a visit with Sherry while she was working at the medical mission in Soto Y Gama, a village near Puebla.

In Sherry’s words:
In 1998, I went on my first mission trip to Mexico with my church and was overwhelmed at the level of poverty and need to just have someone look at them with concern and love. I know that anyone who has been involved with mission work  or even just helped someone in need would say that they got way more out of the experience than the person or persons they helped and I feel that way every single time. I have returned to Mexico every year that God has opened the door for me to go and will continue to travel back there or anywhere God leads!
In the spring of 2010, I spoke to Donna about wanting to help at Forest Park and would she let me know what I might could do and she told me that she had the perfect job for me, if I was interested. Once she told me I was very excited and very scared about how I was to teach a young boy how to read and write in English when I cannot speak Spanish and certainly could not speak Mixtec, but when God is in control nothing is impossible. I worked with Omar all through the spring and summer of that year and he was ready for kindergarten. His 2 younger sisters would also learn with us each week and I fell in love with all of them.
When the family started to talk to us about going back to Mexico we were so scared for them, because we knew of the danger and the limited resources in the country. Donna and I both knew that, since the children had all been born and raised in Alabama that this move was going to be a complete shock to them.
I told Donna that, if God sent me on a trip to Mexico I would find them and make sure they were ok.
When the opportunity came for me to go on a mission trip to Mexico I reached out to my friend, Oscar there and shared the story about this family from Alabama and that I would like to try and visit them, if possible. The report back was that they were living in the mountains about 6 hours away from where we would be working and they had no way to come and visit and we probably would not be able to see them.   I was sad but still thought maybe I will figure it out when we are there and can talk more, but I never had the chance.
The second day our group was in Mexico, Oscar had been asked to find a birthday cake for one of the ladies on the trip with us and he had heard of a man in the church that owned a bakery. Oscar spoke to this man, Herbert and called me over to meet him and Oscar says to me this man Herbert owns a bakery in Clapa, which is only 3 hours from your family and he is willing to take you and your husband with him to visit your family. I was completely shocked in that I had made an assumption I would not be able to see the family, but with God nothing is impossible. The only other thing that would need to happen is the family would need to be willing to travel the other 3 hours for our visit and they were. We contacted the family and set up a day and time to meet.
Once we arrived to meet the family I was shocked by the weight loss and look of despair in the children that had once been so full of life and happiness. We offered to take them to eat lunch and they were starving. We found out during our visit the Dad had not been able to find any work and they were living with the clothes on their back and day to day with finding food for everyone. My heart was broken!
God had plans for this family! I knew that God had not brought me on this journey to find the family in this situation and not help, so I started trying to find out how much would it cost to pay for housing and utilities. Oscar was able to locate a house that would cost very little in a town where we have a connection with a church. We decided to offer the family to move to this town, if they were willing to have the children in school, go to church and find local work. We called the family up and they wanted to move that day!
One important lesson to me I think was more of a way to answer a question that is asked many times and understandably, Why travel to Mexico when there are many needs right here. Many will have an immediate answer and many will agree with the question. The answer is very simple go where God leads.
This story has taught me many other lessons that I have to remind myself of daily.
Nothing is impossible with God.
Follow God’s plan and it will not fail.
Love and care for God’s people.
God speaks to us daily; we just have to listen.

Friends, we feel that God has shown us – and this true story is proof positive – that He is working, whether in our neighborhood or in another country, and we must be willing to surrender to the call to go – where He leads.  Only an omniscient God could orchestrate the events and God-moments that brought us together initially, and brought us back together, along with fellow Christians in another country, to continue the discipleship.  You never know – a simple trip into the neighborhood could lead you to the mountains of Mexico – “For man makes his plans, but God directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9

Fruit of the Spirit

The fruit of the Spirit is not a coconut - or a banana, or a watermelon, or a strawberry, or a grape - what a fun way for Charlotte and Jordan to explain what God's Holy Spirit through belief in Jesus Christ as our Savior can do for each one of us!  Today, Charlotte took a bright yellow banana, and as the children told her about all of the "bad things" that we tend to do (lie, disobey, cheat, etc.), she wrote each sin on the banana.  Afterward - yuch - the banana was so nasty looking!  But as she explained what God's forgiveness through Christ's death, burial, and resurrection does to cleanse our hearts, she slowly peeled the banana to reveal a beautiful, white piece of fruit.  That was such a great and vivid illustration of what God can do in the life of a repentant sinner!  And THREE CHILDREN PRAYED TO RECEIVE CHRIST.
Hey, God shows up in miraculous ways.  Its no secret that the food pantry has been in dire need for many weeks.  July was the largest month of need in recent history, and each week, as the end of the final food distribution day approached, the cupboard was literally bare.  But each week, someone or some church group has been impressed upon by the Holy Spirit to provide - and we have had just what was needed.  Never once did a family come for food when there was not any for them.
Then yesterday happened.  Once again, a sponsoring church came through with a lot of food - enough for next week and maybe even more.  But last night, I received a call.  A person who wishes to remain anonymous has directed a friend of the ministry to purchase a bounty of food, and has donated the funds to do so - well, just look at the shelves now!  And that's just a small portion of what he has directed to be purchased.  So...... never doubt that our God is faithful to provide JUST IN TIME!

Urgent Food Need!

There is a lot of talk these days about the economy - did we really have a "great recession"?  How is the US economy compared with that of European countries?  One thing is for sure - we who meet families every day with dire food shortages, living daily with the probability of homelessness looming over them - we cannot tell you the official magnitude of the recession, but we can tell you that we see hurt and fear.  But we also see hope.  Often, when we reach the time in our intake to pray with a guest, the guest will be such a blessing.  Even in the midst of struggle, there is hope.  "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1)
"Katia" has such hope.  A mom with many children, she recently visited the center and shared with me her joy that she has been able to settle down; she and her children have been in the same home for a year with no plans to move.  And just as she and her family are finally finding stability, her sister suddenly passed away as the result of a cancer that had not been diagnosed in time.  And yes - she had young children, and "Katia" will be helping to provide for them, too.  She is not losing hope, for her hope is in the Lord and His provision.  He has brought her family through tough times before; He will now, too.
Families like Katia's depend upon the breakfasts and lunches that are provided at their children's schools to supplement their food resources in order for the children to have adequate nutrition.  In the summer, those meals are not available.  The result - more need for food at food pantries such as Forest Park Ministry Center.  This July, even though we were closed for the Independence Day holiday, the guest traffic and resulting need for food has been the largest yet this year.  And WE NEED FOOD.  If you and your family could spare just a few cans of food - maybe just add a few cans of veggies or soup, or some peanut butter to your grocery list this week - Forest Park Ministry Center could use your help!  We are open on Mondays and on Wednesdays, and those are days that you can see the food pantry in action when you drop by to deliver your donation.  We will be happy to receive food and clothing donations on other days as well - you will want to call 269-5726 to make a drop off appointment.
Thank you for prayerfully considering assistance in this time of need.
                                                                                        Joyfully serving,

Rain!

Do you remember the old children's rhyme: its raining, its pouring, the old man is snoring?  Well, praise God, it IS raining tonight, it IS pouring - and many parts of our parched area have seen it.  I cannot think of better weather to snore away - and sleep like a baby while listening to it!  Thank you, God, for refreshment!
Refreshment comes in many forms.  At the ministry center, it is refreshing to see volunteers welcoming new faces to partner in the work there.  This summer, Charlotte and Jordan have been warmly welcomed by volunteers and guests alike, and they in turn have taken a young woman under their wings who as a new Christian has a strong desire to minister to others in similar circumstances as she has found herself.  It is a beautiful picture of God's growing kingdom to watch these young women sharing Christ's passion for others, transcending barriers of culture, economics, race, and even life stages.
Recently, a young mother-to-be visited the center and was welcomed and encouraged by E.  When her baby was born, J. visited her and gave her a beautiful layette from the center's Layette Ministry.  When her husband was laid off from his job and the rent was behind, E. sought assistance from her church and Ladies' Prayer Group.  This week, the unemployment and other stresses proved too much for the husband, and he left this dear lady and their baby.  E. was there to pray with and encourage her at a time of crisis in her life, and we have been able to follow up with information about counseling services available through the center.  What a tremendous example of God using many hands, many hearts, to minister to one of His children!
The counseling services that are now available through Forest Park Ministry Center mark one additional step taken as we seek to help people who need to be directed toward God's purpose and plan for their lives to desire His will and guidance.  In addition, there are many outreach opportunities, including literacy for children and for Mixtec moms, sports for boys at Southlawn Commons, and the M&M's Bible Cafe that continues every Tuesday.  In June, over 140 families were reached through the food pantry which distributed nearly 4,000 pounds of food and around fifty volunteers plugged into the various ministries and outreach opportunities.  Thanks to all who invested self, time, talent, finances, and other goods.  May you each know the assurance of God's love and plan for your life, too.  It is a joy to partner with you to reach our community for Christ.

Growing the Kingdom

This weekend we will welcome former members of Forest Park Baptist Church as they hold a reunion on the grounds adjacent to Forest Park Ministry Center.  We are so grateful for the foresight of this body of Christ to provide the facility for the ministry center, to help support the ministries there through the years, and most recently, to fund with the proceeds from the sale of their church building so many much needed improvements to the ministry center building.  We hope that, as they tour the center on Saturday, each person will be assured that their investment in the center is indeed an eternal investment in missions that will grow God’s Kingdom.
Speaking of growing God’s Kingdom, it was a joy and privilege to witness the dedication of a precious toddler by his mother as he was presented to the church on Mother’s Day, just two weeks after she professed her faith in Christ and was baptized before that same body.  As she continues to be mentored through ministries at the center and discipled through Bible study in her church, I marvel at her spiritual growth.
This summer, two young college women with a passion for the Lord and for missions have joined us as Summer Missionaries.  Charlotte Walker from Autauga County, a student at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS, and Jordan Holley from Montgomery, a student at AUM, will be assisting both at Forest Park Ministry Center and at Community of Hope with child care, children’s Bible study and literacy events,  sports outreach events and Backyard Bible Clubs.  They have a very full summer ahead, and are pumped about it!  Several churches have asked them to share on Wednesday nights with their youth about missions opportunities at Forest Park, but there are a couple of Wednesdays still available.  If you would like them to share with a group at your church, please call us at the center 269-5726 on Monday or Wednesday morning (they will be “out and about” doing ministry otherwise!) so that we can schedule it.
Please continue to pray for the guests who visit the ministry center.  As the summer progresses, numbers of guests increase, and especially while children are out of school and reduced / free lunches not available, food shortage is even more dire than at other times.   In May, we saw over 130 families, helping about 350 family members, distributing nearly two tons of food.  The M&M’s Bible Café, a Bible study for young moms and mentors, continues each week and many more literacy, sports, and outreach events have been planned and are being implemented for the summer.  Stay tuned for details about the summer, and for details about a Fall Open House so that everyone can see the growth and progress happening here!
